Hmmmmm...
He was running for the position of NUS President. Not for leading the Caliphate. On that basis it would have been and IS acceptable to have voted yes for Pav.
In addition the deal that FOSIS made with more right-wing factions of the NUS hasn't worked out for them at all. They are still appealing for prayer rooms to be accommodated, dietary requirements are still not being met at conferences. How is not being able to pray spiritually better for Muslims (for someone like myself)?
I would have looked at the most progressive candidate regardless of his/her sexuality. There were two candidates and Pav had greater merit in uniting a broad spectrum of groups in order to push for a broader agenda (which would have accommodated Muslims' rights by the way). Pav was the better option. He happened to be gay.

I may not be gay, I may not advocate homosexuality as a practise, but I have no qualms in having a gay person represent my interests as they are not in conflict with our political agenda.

What do you mean "don't judge"?

Do you mean, don't say it's haraam to practise and promote homosexuality? If that's what you're saying, then you are very wrong. This is clear-cut in Islam and it's our duty as Muslims to state these facts clearly.

You claim that Pav was "made gay" - do you not feel ashamed to say this? What is that (Punjabi) quote you came up with, nothing to do with Islam, just your personal opinion.

To say he is "Muslim and gay", he is committing a heinous sin from which he must repent sincerely, and then he will receive Allah's mercy.

There's a horrible, hysterical thread over at MPACUK now:
http://www.mpacuk.org/content/view/4/1512/103/

I don't think many of them understand the seriousness of this issue, and are quite content to accuse FOSIS despite not even knowing the basis of their decision (at least I admit when I'm speculating).

Let me reproduce excerpts from 2 comments, which add nicely to what I've written above:

1. "Pav Akhtar is not a closet gay muslim...he's active LGBT campaigner (= lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) and has been the LGBT Black Students Rep on a number of NUS committees for a number of yrs. What he does in his personal life is his business, but to actively go out and campaign for gay rights and declare himself muslim - as he does - means he does no favours for the essential islamic message. FOSIS' aim is to adhere to the traditional teachings of the quran and sunnah (see their constitution) so they are constitutionally bound to NOT support him for president, regardless who his opposition is. That doesnt meant they cant work with him, as evidenced by him speaking at numerous fosis events in the past."

2. "If he did win and FOSIS voted for him then it would be FOSIS who would have to answer to Allah as to why we let somone openly committing sin represent us. is this not encouraging for those who are closet homos to come out openly because an organisation that constitutes to adhere to the Qur'an and Sunnah allowed a homosexual to represent a general Muslim body!"

Salam,
I think another reason not to support such a candidate, even if he has the merits, is because of the ripple effect that it could create within the Muslim youth and community in general. It would be sending the (incorrect) message that adherring to a gay identity is acceptable in Islam and by the new generation of (UK) Muslims. While I agree with you that saying that they "wouldn't vote for a gay candidate" sounds very shallow, the reasons behind such a decision are, I feel, very relevant in order not to promote this behaviour among Muslims.
God knows best.
